Unity is Nice
That’s usually what we think. Unity is something we all want and it stirs a nice, warm fuzzy feeling.
Maybe we think of unity as a pleasantry. Something that glows during a Christmas Eve service or a patriotic event.
But unity is way more important than that.
Unity should be a primary goal, one of vital importance. Unity with other believers should be the result of all our efforts at building the Kingdom.
Previously, we discussed how the basis of unity is founded in the Trinity. Because the three persons of God are in complete unity, then out of that should flow the basis for our unity.
Out of this foundation, we see more reasons why unity should be just as important to us as it is to God.
God Desires It
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
John 17:20-21
Jesus prayed it. He wants us all to be one just as He and the Father are one. During this most intimate encounter between Father and Son, we see a glimpse at their truest desire. God wants for us most what He possess for Himself- complete oneness.
God Made a Way for It
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
Eph 2:14-16
God just didn’t say ‘Hey, I want you to be unified. Go, figure it out for yourselves!”
No, God made a way for us to be one. He made a way to break the diving walls!
Through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, He made the way for us to break through our differences to break the walls that divide us and become one Body!
Understanding the Heart of God
When we understand the heart of God and why Unity is so important to Him, then it will help us to understand why unity should be important to us.
Ask yourself- What in your church congregation or worship experience is really important to you?
Is it the preaching? The elements of worship? The small groups? Serving? Bible study?
All those things are vitally important, but are they what’s most important?
Another question to consider- how are we using these important aspects of Christian living to develop unity?
Maybe that’s the more important question.
When what is important to God becomes important to us, we’ll come closer to being at one with the heart of God.
Pray with me: Father, let your desire be my desire. Give me an understanding of unity so that I can help build unity in others. Help me break dividing walls through the power of Your Son! In Jesus Name, Amen
