To Be Fully Known

We sing the worship songs “I want to Know You more”, ‘Knowing You”, “More Love, More Power”, “The More I seek You….” We proclaim our desire is to become closer to God, one with God.

With sincere hearts, we sing and pray about how we want to know God more. With good intentions, we attempt, in our human abilities, to understand Him, comprehend Him, and dwell in His presence. This is a good and right thing to pursue.

I believe in our enthusiasm, however, we are being just a tad bit presumptuous.

How could we ever think that as mere mortals, as dust of the earth, we could approach God to know Him. I mean, our breath isn’t even our own. It’s His!

I know what you’re thinking…….yes, through the blood of Jesus, we have access to approach God’s throne boldly! And, we should. We also need to make it a life discipline to pursue a relationship with God and to know Him.

We can never know all there is to know about God though. He’s just too infinite. We get glimpses of Him. We peel back layers of Him. But, we can’t ever fully know Him.

What I think we really want is to be KNOWN by Him.

Placed deep within the heart of our humanity and our spirits is this unquenchable desired to be known, to be understood, to be loved. And, when we pray or sing, “I want to know You more”, what we want, really, is for God to know us.

Most of the pursuits in our daily lives is to be known. From the moment we are born, we seek attention to get our needs met, to be seen, and to be cared for.

“Mommy, Daddy…..look at me!”

All through our lives, we build relationships and we produce all manner of activities so that we will be seen and known.

Of course, that’s what gets us into a lot of trouble, too.

When we don’t feel seen or known, we make horrible decisions which reap horrible consequences and get us into horrible bondage. Just ask the drug addict, the incarcerated prisoner, the single mom with more than 1 baby-daddy. Or, just ask the shopping addict, the selfie addict, or  *cough*….the chocolate addict.

When we get before God, and we are worshipping Him in His presence, we should recognize this desire within us. We should pray “I want You to know ME!” That’s where our deepest desire to be know is met.

By His Spirit, He dwells in us and whispers “I Know you, I see you, You are special to Me.”

It’s not selfish to ask this of God. He wants to know you. The truth is….He already does.

When we allow Him to know us, our soul gets satisfied, our questions get answered, our desires get fulfilled.

I love the song by Tauren Wells, “Known”

I’m fully known and loved by You
You won’t let go no matter what I do
And it’s not one or the other
It’s hard truth and ridiculous grace
To be known fully known and loved by You
I’m fully known and loved by You

Do you want to be known by God?

What bad decisions have you made in an attempt to be known?

How can you make yourself available to be known by God?
