Think of a food that must have salt, or else, it tastes awful…..
What comes to mind?
Potatoes? Corn? Eggs?….Popcorn!?!
When the kids were little, one time, I made a batch of homemade muffins and forgot to add the salt. No one touched them! They were horrible!
Jesus used the idea of salt to help us understand how we should be effective in the lives of others.
Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.”
Mark 9:50
You must have the qualities of salt
What are the qualities of salt?
Salt plays a huge role in the enhancement of our food. Salt benefits us in lots of other ways too- as a food preservative, an essential nutrient, providing flavor and texture, and also enhancing color. www.thespruceeats.com
The Bible contains numerous references to salt. In various contexts, it is used metaphorically to signify permanence, loyalty, durability, fidelity, usefulness, value, and purification.en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Salt_in_the_Bible
In a physical sense, we know salt is used to enhance flavor, and as a preservative. But in a spiritual sense, to ‘be salt’ means to deliberately seek to influence the people in one’s life by showing them the unconditional love of Christ through good deeds.
Of all these qualities of salt, 2 stick out to me the most.
Salt makes food taste better.
Forget all the other qualities. The main reason we use salt is to bring out the flavor of our food. Remember those flat muffins?
Our lives should similarly be flavored with Christ. As Christians, we’re supposed to add flavor, add value, or make the people around us better because of the qualities of Christ we carry in us. Our lives should enhance the lives of others.
Salt makes people thirsty.
When we consume salt, it raises the sodium levels in our blood. Your thirst response is triggered so you’ll drink water. Adding water to your system will balance out the extra sodium making sure you don’t have too much or too little salt in your system. Our bodies are so fearfully and wonderfully made!
Spiritually, we should make people thirsty for Christ. Your life should be so full of the flavor of Christ, that it makes people thirsty for Jesus. Can you think of someone that just being around them makes you want to be better or be closer to Jesus?
As Christians, we need to bring value to the people around us adding essential nutrients, flavor and texture to their lives. What Christ has deposited in us, we need to allow to overflow the people around us.
We need to make people thirsty for the Jesus
Does your life bring the flavor of Christ to the people and environments around you?
